Helping Cats with Poor Kidney Function

This seems like good information…our family has lost several cats to the cystitis described here…

There are several products that can help your cat cope with poor kidney function.  In this article we will have a look at Azodyl and Epakitin.  Both are over the counter products that can be bought easily and cheaply online without the need for a prescription.  You should discuss any medications or supplements used, with your vet because they will have more experience about which ones are most likely to benefit your particular pet.

Cats are often prone to kidney problems.  They are desert animals originally that tend not to drink much.  As a result any problems with their kidneys tends to be exacerbated by the simple fact that these animals do not flush out toxins with much liquid. Azodyl capsules help with this issue quickly.  The product contains beneficial bacteria that bind to toxins building up in the gut and bowels.  They are then flushed out of the system via the digestive tract.  This is a completely natural product, that is classified as a nutritional supplement rather than a medication.  There are other versions available but Azodyl is the most popular form used in cats today.  There are no known side effects so this this is a great product to be using for an unwell animal.

The second problem with kidney failure is that phosphates tend to build up in the blood very quickly since the kidneys are not flushing them out as they should.  Phosphates aggravate damaged kidneys, leading to faster deterioration of these particular organs.   Cats with known kidney damage or renal failure are supposed to be fed a diet low in phosphorous to help this problem.  However, many pets are unwilling to accept a low phosphorous pet food which makes things more difficult.  As Epakitin contains a natural enzyme that actually binds to phosphates, flushing them out of the system before they can cause further damage to the kidneys it is a recommended supplement for pets experiencing these problems.

Pet owners face a real struggle in keeping up with the range of medicines needed for pets experiencing kidney problems.  These two options (Azodyl and Epakitin) are widely used, with no side effects to treat many thousands of cats and help slow down the progress of the disease.
