Some great information on training dogs…..
So here you are training an older or what many would describe as an aggressive breed like the Rottweiler or maybe even a German Shepherd and you are a tad bit scared that your dog may bite you. Whether you are a professional trainer or an owner with an aggressive dog, you need to make sure you are safe when working to get your dog to respond to your commands. The easiest way to do that, in my opinion and with my large experience with dogs is to use a plastic basket muzzle to ensure that the dog doesn’t get to have a chance to bite you.
If you are dealing with a dog that has a known history of violence and aggression then it is best that you consider getting what I call industrial strength muzzles. Namely, you need to look at leather or wire mesh muzzles. With so many muzzles however, it can get a bit difficult to sort and keep them all in one place. So what I usually do is stock up all my muzzles in plastic storage boxes and then use a permanent marker to write down what size and breeds it will fit on the muzzle itself. If you are having trouble labeling dark colored muzzles, which are usually the ones made out of leather, then you should look at getting a silver permanent pen or a white one instead. To be extra cautious, make sure that you only buy ones which explicitly state that they use non-toxic ink in them.
Getting the dog used to wearing a muzzle can be a difficult task however but you should make sure you don’t tie the muzzle straps up the first few times you use it. Ideally, you would like your dog play around with one to get them comfortable with the idea of wearing one.
